How to Jump Rope

This month’s Active More Powerful You Challenge was to find for your family to exercise together. Family time can involve both fun and fitness. What you do to get your body moving and get your heart rate up depends on your fitness level, how much time you have, and what you like to do. Jumping rope is a great workout that you can all do without having to get in the car or go very far. If you haven’t picked up a jumprope in a while, here are some basic technique tips to get you started. To find a rope that’s the right size and fit, place one foot in the center of the rope and lift the handles. They shouldn’t go past your armpits. Jump one to two inches off the floor, giving the rope just enough space to slip under your feet. Only the balls of your feet should touch the floor. Keep your elbows close to your sides as you turn the rope. The movement comes from the wrist and forearms, not the shoulders. Jump for as long as you can at a steady pace. Work up to using the rope full time for a solid 10 or 15 minutes. Mix this into other parts of your weekly physical activity routine to keep it fun. You can also incorporate different jumping styles and do other movements with the rope to work out your arms and other muscles. Try jumping on one foot or alternate feet, like you’re skipping, or have some fun with kids by having a jump roping contest.
